Glucagon is an antagonist of insulin. While insulin tries to push Glucose from the blood into the liver and other cells in the body, Glucagon mobilizes glycogen from the liver and converts it to glucose.

Glucagon is commonly used by ambulance crew to abort hypoglycemia in the emergency site out in the community. There is no reason why it cannot be utilized in the ER.

Another action for which Glucagon is used is as an antagonist against beta blocker overdosage. It is the DOC in Beta blocker overdoses.
