This is an emergency situation for the ophthalmologist and these patients MUST be referred to an ophthalmologist for monitoring the possible dendritic ulcer. Steroids are contra-indicated .Treatment includes antiviral agents - both topically and systemically (Famciclovir/Valaciclovir - remember that Valaciclovir is to be avoided in immunosuppressed patients e.g. HIV)
