CARDIOLOGY

Recognize and appropriately treat diastolic heart failure.

Explanation:

Diastolic heart failure has increased wedge pressure but normal ejection fraction (and the ventricle is unable to relax well).

It is common among poorly controlled hypertensives where the heart muscle works against a high pressure and as a result it hypertrophies and is unable to relax.

The treatment of choice include medicines which will help the muscle relax. B-blockers or Verapamil.Inotropic agents such as Digoxin and Milrinone etc. are contraindicated.
