Know the best therapy for Acute sinusitis
Explanation:
Acute sinusitis is most commonly caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae and
Hemophilus influenzae. It should ideally be treated with Augmentin
but with the coming of HMOs the most cost effective treatment is
Amoxicillin as of 2001. Bactrim (Sulfamethoxizole + trimethoprim) used to be it
until last year but do not mark it as the answer this year.
Chronic sinusitis - on the other hand is not treated with
antibiotics. It
needs an ENT consult.
If an NG tube is the cause of the sinusitis then the NG tube needs to be removed
and Imipenem/Meropenem should be used(GNRs and Staph).
