ADHD: Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder. It has come into the limelight due to inappropriate diagnosis and overtreatment in children in the USA.
Inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity are the core symptoms. In order for this diagnosis to be made, these symptoms must impair achievement in social, academic or occupation settings. The features must be present before the age of 7 years. THe following 4 disorders must be excluded: Autism, Mood disorder, psychosis or anxiety.
M:F prevalence is 4:1 ie 80% of patients are male.
