Breast cancer depends on several factors of which some important ones are listed. Conditions that allow high levels of estrogen to persist for long periods of time, such as early menarche (before age 12), late menopause (after age 55), having children after age 30, and nulliparity. A woman's risk of breast cancer increases with the amount of time she is exposed to estrogen.
Prostate Cancer:
Age: Males older age of 50. Recommend annual PSA and Digital Rectal Exam.
Family History: 1first degree male relative (father or brother) with the disease doubles the risk - more if they were young at the time of diagnosis.
Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH): BPH is not related to higher risk
Diet: High animal fat diet may increase the risk.
Ethnicity: Prostate cancer is most common in northwestern Europe, especially in Denmark. It is also common in North America. It occurs less frequently in Asia, Africa, Central America and South America.
Race: twice as common among African-American males. Asians are at very low risk.
Vasectomy: Controversial, although some studies show that vasectomy can increase the risk of developing prostate cancer by a 50%. However, this has not been firmly established.
